How To Keep Elderly Residents Warm This Winter
Tips to keep the elderly warm and well.
During the colder months of the year, elderly individuals are at increased risk. When temperatures plummet below 8oc, elderly residents are more susceptible to illnesses, such as pneumonia, hypothermia, flu and even heart attacks.
With this in mind, we have compiled five ways to help elderly residents stay warm and well this winter.
5 ways to help keep elderly residents warm and well:
1. Add more thin layers
Layering several thin clothing items can maintain more body heat than wearing a single knitted jumper. If an elderly resident is struggling to stay warm in their favourite woolly jumper, additional layers may offer greater levels of warmth and comfort.
2. Keep temperatures up
It is important to keep temperatures above 18oc throughout the day and night time especially. Elderly individuals with heart or respiratory problems should be kept in the warm during very cold weather.
3. Shut out the cold
As evenings draw in, temperatures naturally decrease. Draw curtains and ensure doors are securely closed to block out unwelcome drafts. Cold drafts cause discomfort and potentially worsen pre-existing conditions associated with Winter.
4. Hot meals are important
Ensure elderly residents consume at least one hot meal a day. Warm drinks such as tea, coffee and hot chocolate can keep elderly individuals a little warmer too.
5. Add additional warmth
If a resident is still struggling to stay warm, consider recommending a heated blanket or hot water bottle. These are both excellent sources of additional heat, but should not be used together. If an elderly individual has an older heated blanket, ensure it is professionally checked and signed off prior to use.
